Thiruvananthapuram: The long-awaited Thiruvananthapuram Metro Rail Project has moved a major step forward with approval granted for the Phase 1 alignment. The first stretch will connect key transit and commercial hubs including Technopark, the airport, Thampanoor bus stand, railway station, Secretariat, and the Medical College, marking a historic boost to the capital’s public transport network. The project will be implemented by Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL).
According to the approved plan, the metro will begin at Pappanamcode, passing through Killipalam, Palayam, Sreekaryam, Kazhakootam, Technopark Trivandrum, Kochuveli, and the airport, before ending at Enchakkal.
The 31-km elevated corridor will feature 27 stations, with major interchange points at Kazhakootam, Technopark, and Kariavattom. Officials say this phase will drastically ease road congestion and enhance last-mile connectivity across the city.
Future Expansions Planned
The metro will expand further in its second phase:
-
Phase 2A: Kazhakootam to Attingal
-
Phase 2B: Enchakkal to Vizhinjam
-
Phase 2C: Pappanamcode to Neyyattinkara
Together, these routes will link the city center with the Vizhinjam International Seaport to the south and Attingal to the north, supporting the capital’s rapid urban growth.
Flyover Construction to Support Metro Works
To ensure seamless metro development, the construction of Sreekaryam, Ulloor, and Pattom flyovers has been handed over to Kochi Metro Rail Limited. The Sreekaryam flyover is already progressing at a fast pace, reducing bottlenecks along the NH stretch.
A Game-changer for the Capital
Once completed, the Thiruvananthapuram Metro is expected to:
-
Reduce traffic congestion
-
Offer improved public transport access from suburban regions
-
Support IT, tourism, and educational hubs
-
Strengthen connectivity with Vizhinjam Port and Kazhakootam Corridor
With land acquisition and pre-construction activities already underway, the metro project is set to transform the capital city into a modern, well-connected urban centre.
